North and West S.T.E.A.M. Champions!!
At the end of our last academic year Cavan Youthreach were invited to take part in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) competition. The competition, Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead, was being run by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) and Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning at Dublin City University (CASTeL).
We first had to brainstorm both teachers and learners to manufacture an idea and there were many however we decided to create a Rube Goldberg machine, powered only by Kinetic and Potential energy.
Our project consisted of using the code for Cavan Youthreach (CNYR) and making 4 runs where a series of balls would go through the letters using nothing but their stored (potential) and actual (Kinetic) energy helped of course using springs, rat-traps and elastics. As the learners worked on the project they found that we needed more....TBC.
Below right: Cavan Youthreach held a Tea Party to celebrate 10 years of ETBI.. This was held as part of a photographic competition and YES..We won :) :) :)
